The flower with the striking spur has many popular names due to its unusual flower shape: gypsy bell, fool's cap, pigeon flower, elf glove or even Venus' chariot. The latter alludes to the fact that in the Middle Ages the columbine (Aquilegia) was believed to have a great love-inducing effect. The columbine genus includes around 120 species, all of which are native to the northern hemisphere. While the species from North America often bloom yellow or red and are pollinated by hummingbirds in their natural habitat, those from Europe and Asia usually have blue, purple, white or pink flowers and are very popular with insects.
