The Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) is the fastest growing species of the genus Wisteria. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and is also known as wisteria. As its name suggests, Wisteria sinensis is originally native to China.
5 seeds for 3€ Growth The left-winding Chinese wisteria (unlike the related Japanese wisteria) is extremely vigorous and can reach a final height of ten meters. Wisteria is one of the few climbing plants that develop such a stable trunk over the years that it is able to support its crown without any climbing aid. This is why you can also grow the summer green wisteria as a standard tree with suitable pruning measures. Wisteria is long-lived and can live up to 100 years. All parts of the wisteria - especially flowers and fruits - are poisonous (including to many animals)!
Leaves The summer green climbing plants have smooth-edged, pinnate leaves with 7 to 13 narrow, egg-shaped individual leaflets. The leaves turn yellow in autumn and are then shed.
Flowers The Chinese wisteria offers an overwhelming spectacle when it is in bloom. The blue flower clusters grow close together and can be over 30 centimeters long. The blue-violet individual flowers appear before the leaves sprout in May. All flowers in a cluster open at the same time. Occasionally there is a weaker second bloom in late summer. The nectar-rich and fragrant flowers are heavily pollinated by bees.
