The wild artichoke (Cynara cardunculus) is a perennial plant in the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is the wild form of the cultivated artichoke and is native to the Mediterranean region, but has also spread to other regions. Characteristics: Growth form: The wild artichoke can reach a height of 1 to 2 meters. It has an upright growth and often forms dense stands. Leaves: The leaves are large, pinnate and have a gray-green color. They are strongly toothed and can grow up to 80 cm long. The leaves are hairy and have a rough texture. Flowers: The flowers appear in large, spherical inflorescences (baskets) and are usually purple or bluish. The flowering period is from June to August. The flowers attract numerous insects, including bees and butterflies. Fruits:

After flowering, small, winged achenes form and are spread by the wind.

Location and care:

Light: Wild artichokes prefer sunny locations with plenty of light.

Soil:

They thrive best in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Drought is tolerated, but they require sufficient water during the growing season.

Watering:

Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods.

Uses:
Edible plant: While the wild artichoke's inflorescences are not as large and fleshy as the cultivated artichoke, the young shoots and leaves can be used as a vegetable. They have a slightly bitter taste and can be served boiled or steamed.

Ornamental plant:

Due to its striking flowers, the wild artichoke is also used as an ornamental plant in gardens. It is well suited to natural gardens or as part of perennial beds.
