The granadilla only produces fruit in warm, humid weather, and usually in autumn when grown in pots. However, a second plant in the vicinity is a prerequisite, as Passiflora ligularis is dependent on cross-pollination. To encourage fruit formation, you should pollinate the flowers with a brush to be on the safe side. When unripe, the fruits are blue-green and often covered with light spots. Ripe fruits have a bright orange-yellow color and are about the size of a tennis ball. Unlike passion fruit, their skin is harder and does not shrivel when the fruit is stored. Botanically speaking, the fruit of the passion flower is a berry. To enjoy it fresh, cut the fruit crosswise and spoon out the seeds and the surrounding fruity goo (botanically known as "pulp"). The fruits of the granadilla taste sweeter than the fruits of the passion fruit, but not quite as aromatic, as they contain less acid to round things off.
