Origin and harvest season of the Bird's Eye Chili The origin is in South and Central America, later also Southeast Asia. Large growing areas are now in India, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.
Bird's Eye Chilis like it warm; it is best to plant them 2-3 weeks after the last frost. The still unripe green or yellow fruits can be cut off about 100 days after planting. Normally, however, they are harvested after about 130 days, by which time the 2-4 centimetre long pods have turned bright red, are fully ripe and can be dried. Thai curries owe their characteristic colour and taste to the different degrees of ripeness (yellow, green or red) of the chilis.
